Apeiranthos

Apeiranthos

If there is one place in the Cyclades that stubbornly refuses to look like any other, it is Apeiranthos Naxos. Built on the slopes of Mount Fanari, at an altitude reaching nearly 600 meters, “Aperathou” (as the locals call it) is a truly unique destination. A village crafted almost entirely from shimmering marble, it preserves its distinctive dialect, traditional customs, and medieval architecture completely intact. If you are planning your accommodation in Naxos at Dedalos Studios, this mountainous excursion is an absolute must-live experience.

A Distinct History and the Connection to Crete

Apeiranthos has been inhabited since antiquity, but its modern identity was forged during the Byzantine and Venetian periods. The most fascinating element of the village is its people: their unique local idiom, which retains many ancient Greek roots, and their proud tradition of improvising mantinades (rhyming poems) testify to their strong historical roots from mountainous Crete (specifically from Sfakia and Anogia), from where populations migrated during the Middle Ages. The village has also given birth to legendary personalities of Greek history. It is the homeland of Manolis Glezos, the iconic hero of the World War II National Resistance and prominent politician, as well as the former Prime Minister of Greece, Petros Protopapadakis.

Strolling through Marble Alleys and Architecture

The architecture of Apeiranthos is a true masterpiece of stonemasonry. As you enter the village, you will walk along the platsa (the wide, marble-paved squares) and get delightfully lost in narrow, winding alleys (kalderimia) entirely paved with local Naxian marble. The houses, built of finely chiseled stone, are connected by impressive overhead stone archways (stegadia), while defensive Venetian towers dominate the settlement’s skyline—the most famous being the 17th-century Zevgoli Tower. In Apeiranthos, traditional Cycladic charm meets medieval fortifications in absolute harmony.

A Village-Museum: 5 Cultural Spaces

Apeiranthos is rightfully considered the cultural capital of the island, boasting five exceptional Museums of Apeiranthos that are well worth a visit:
  1. Archaeological Museum: Featuring rare finds from the Early Cycladic period and unique prehistoric rock carvings.
  2. Folklore Museum: A faithful representation of a traditional Apeiranthian home from the past century, showcasing authentic household items.
  3. Geological Museum: One of the richest mineral collections in Greece, highlighting the famous and historically crucial Naxian emery (smiris).
  4. Natural History Museum: Dedicated to the fascinating flora and fauna of the island and the wider Aegean region.
  5. Museum of Fine Arts: Showcasing exceptional works by contemporary Naxian artists.
Furthermore, the village keeps the ancient art of hand-weaving alive. At the Apeiranthos Women’s Traditional Craft Cooperative, you will find authentic, stunning textiles hand-woven on traditional looms.

Hiking & Trekking in the Shadow of the Peaks

For hiking enthusiasts, Apeiranthos offers some of the most scenic and rewarding trails among all villages in Naxos:
  • Apeiranthos – Moni Trail: A beautiful, challenging route that leads walkers past old emery mines, historical Byzantine chapels, and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Aegean Sea.
  • Trail to the Tower of Agia: A historical walk that perfectly combines untouched nature with the medieval fortification history of the area.

Moutsouna: The Seaside Port of Apeiranthos

Unlike other landlocked mountain settlements, Apeiranthos boasts its very own “window” to the sea. Driving down the winding, majestic mountain road for about 12 kilometers (roughly 15–20 minutes), you will reach Moutsouna Naxos, the picturesque port of the village.
  • Historical Significance: Moutsouna was the busy industrial port from which Naxian emery was exported worldwide. Even today, you can admire the historical overhead cable railway (teleferik) and the old iron tracks, giving the harbor a unique, industrial-retro charm.
  • Beaches & Sea Quality: Moutsouna features two beautiful, sheltered beaches with crystalline, shallow, azure waters and golden sand—Ai Giannis and Tigani—making them perfect for relaxing swims away from the wind.
  • Dining by the Waves: Around the harbor, excellent local fish taverns serve freshly caught seafood and local delicacies literally right where the waves meet the shore.
